DTU Campus Service has implemented ISO50001-certified energy management across its campuses in Lyngby, Ballerup, and Risø. With the help of 4BC, energy work has been translated into a practical, operations-oriented structure with clear roles, energy mapping, SEUs, targets, and action plans.

DTU Campus Service faced a complex task: to establish a certifiable energy management system within a university operation that includes many building types, research activities, technical installations, and very diverse usage patterns.

4BC assisted DTU Campus Service in translating the ISO50001 requirements into a model suitable for daily operations. The work included, among other things, GAP analysis, structuring the energy management system, organization, workshops, energy mapping, identification of significant energy-consuming units, targets, action plans, and documentation leading up to certification.

The result is an energy management system that is not just about compliance, but about making energy improvements an integrated part of operations, management, and ongoing prioritization.

ISO50001 is often used in larger industrial companies with more stable and predictable energy profiles. DTU's operations are different. Energy consumption is affected by research, teaching, laboratories, workshops, ventilation, cooling, heating, and changing usage patterns across campuses.

The challenge was therefore not only to achieve certification but to create a system that could live within the organization: with clear processes, entrenched responsibility, common prioritization, and practical tools for employees who work with energy consumption on a daily basis.

Results

ISO50001 Certified Energy Management System

DTU Campus Service has achieved ISO50001 certification and established an energy management system that combines energy policy, goals, action plans, data, responsibilities, and follow-up in one common structure.

From Standalone Energy Projects to Systematic Improvement

Energy savings are no longer just individual projects, but an integrated part of operations and management dialogue. The system supports continuous improvements and makes it possible to prioritize efforts where the potential is greatest.

Better Basis for Prioritization

The energy mapping has identified the most significant energy-consuming areas, including laboratory and workshop equipment, cooling production, ventilation, and heating. This provides DTU CAS with a stronger basis for prioritizing resources, investments, and operational efforts.

Employee Involvement as a Guiding Principle

Operational staff and managers have been involved through workshops and joint development of energy management. This has ensured that the system is based on the reality where energy consumption occurs – and where improvements are to be realized.

Key figures
